7 Tips to Keep your Tummy Safe While Travelling in South East Asia

I love to try new dishes when travel. I tried fried insect in Thailand and "dragon" meat in China. Those bizarre food are interesting but not my type of dish.

The worst tummy experience for me was in Poi Pet, Cambodia. I had  been on road from Malaysia to Cambodia around one week. I was very tired and ordered a bowl of porridge. It may be due to unhygienic water in that area. After that meal, I felt sick. I kept vomit and feeling dizzy. Due to my very pale look, The immigration didn't bother to look at my passport twice. He just wave his hand and instructed to leave immediately.

That night, my parent brought me to visit doctor. Poi Pet had lost of casino. Thus, most of the casino have their medical team too. We were brought to meet the doctor. I was very dizzy, laying on the bed like a status. Next, a very strong smell of alcohol reach my nostril. I saw a doctor was swaying  left and right with a needle on his hand. I was praying very hard that he didn't inject me with needle. Luckily, The doctor also realize that my condition still stable. He just gave me some medicine and left.

Later only I found out that the doctor was attending some local wedding ceremony. He been drinking quite heavily. Due to my condition, the hotel management request him to attend my case. Phew luckily, he did not give me injection. I can't imagine the consequence of poking at the wrong place.  After 3 days of medication, I felt better and proceed to Siam Reap.

Here are & tips to keep your tummy safe while travelling
  1. Go Easy on Fat & Sugar
  2. Plan Your Meals
  3. Go Easy on Spicy Foods
  4. Eat Moderate Portions
  5. Be Cautious of What You Eat

That was  my experience. There are  many unplanned events happen during our travel. That is why I love travelling. I love to read this never ending book of earth.

Seafood Buffet, Harbour Cafe @ Traders Hotel, Puteri Harbour, Johor

Trader hotel is having seafood buffet every FRIDAY. YES, FRIDAY..... TGIF...... Next day is Saturday. I can still work out on the next day. Makan dulu, Nanti baru fikir  (Eat First, ^^ later only find solution for the weight......)

Variety of food

Executive Chef Allan Wong recommend us to try the fried Shisamo and fried soft crab to kick start our buffet. Shisama is a kid of fish with lots of egg. I used to buy its as tidbits in Thailand. The fried soft crab is very nice. Every time my brother comes back from the counters, sure he brings back fried soft crab.

Lotus and Peanut soup is Chef Allan Wong 's mother recipe. Chef Allan Wong speaks proudly about this soup. I like the light lotus fragrance in the soup.  Chef adds some dried squid for the extra flavor.

Sasimi Combination
All Sashimi is prepared fresh. This remind me of 将太の寿司 Shota no Sushi。  The main protagonist, always in search of the freshest and best ingredient for his customer.  The fresh scallop and octopus are y favorite.

Thin crust pizza with garlic and cheese
I like the thin crust.

Seafood and some chilled white wine is a great combination.

Chili Crab
A very big crab to be shared by us. Do you know what is the best thing while eating crab? seafood cracker? Hammer? hand glove? No No NO. ... The best thing is we got a special crab cracker, Mr Kelvin. He is a really professional. The crab meat is clean neatly from the crab shell. All crab meat is then put on a plate and rotate among the girls. Till today, I still very grateful for him. I don't eat crab. My brother do. Based on his feedback, the crab meat is very fresh and sweet. A very good combination with hot and spicy chili sauce.

Salmon Baked in Salt Crust is one unique dish I ever tasted. Egg white and salt is beaten together until fluffy foam. The foam wrapped the whole salmon fish. The fish is baked for 4 hours before served. The fish still maintain its moisture and authentic taste.  I really like this dish

Dessert Station
There are more than 30 types of dessert at the dessert station. Sadly, my second stomach is ot big enough to try all the dessert.

This is the first double chocolate fountain in Johor.
It may be the first one in Malaysia. There are 6 layers for the chocolate to flow. (May be the tallest too in Johor)The more layer mean the smoother the chocolate is. This statement is stated in the anime, Yumeiro Patissiere. Marshmallow can be easily wrap by chocolate. In the dipping process, I noticed that there is no hard pieces of chocolate stick to the mash mallow. The marshmallow and smooth chocolate is great combination

Crepe with Red Bean Paste Filling / 豆沙窝饼
Special dessert by Chef Neon Meng. Chef Neon Meng learnt this dessert in Shanghai. This dish need a lot of skills and technique to  make. It took him more than one day to make this prefect  crepe. 2 types of dough are mixed together. The paste need to be freeze first.Next, he need to double check that the crepe is free of hole. Before he fried it, high oil temperature need to be tested. This is to ensure the crepe will be fried to golden brown.

Crepe with Jade Green Paste 翡翠窝饼
I prefer the jade green paste. Jade green paste use natural pandan leave juice. Thus it give the light green or jade green colour with pandan flavour. Thank you Kelvin. The crepe is quite tender soft. Not to forget pipping hot. He have to "tahan" for some time just to let me take this angle. It is best to use hand to pick up this dessert. Avoid chopstick as it may spoil the texture.

22 March 2014

My mum brought a box of Brimm Brounee. It is the latest, the most popular dessert in Johor Bahru. Within a month, their facebook page reaches more than 1000 likes. How can I miss it? I am a super dessert lover.

Simple packaging with all the detail on it.
Let me share small history of Brimm Brunee. It was innovated by a pair of couple in Petaling Jaya. All the desserts are baked with lots of love. Thus, the brownies is so good to the last crumb. It is quite popular in Petaling Jaya. Mr. Fazli from Johor Bahru wants to share this good dessert to JBrian. BrimmBrouneeHBhavoc Facebook page is created.

Lots of walnut on the surface of the brownie.

The main thing about brownies is coco powder need to be more than flour. From the side cut, the texture is a bit crust and firm. When you bite it, it is good. It have a bit hard crust but in the middle is a bit soft. Not to forget, the walnut give the extra favour to the overall texture. Just my personal preference, it is a bit too sweet. I prefer biter brownie.

路邊一棵榕樹下 是我懷念的地方
晴朗的天空 涼爽的風
還有醉人的綠草香

My dad is a old Johorian. Everytime, he passed by this stall, he will sing this Chinese oldies <榕樹下>. Frankly speaking, Seng Huat stall is under a rambutan tree not a "Rong Shu".

Ler : Pa Why You always sing this song? This is clearly a rambutan tree.
Dad: hahaha, look behind the stall.

I turn around. Yes indeed opposite the Seng Huat stall is a small coffee shop. The small coffee shop have a "Rong Shu" tree there. My dad used to grow up that during his childhood time. He like to tell us the story growing up in that area. (That will be another post on Old Johor Bahru Stories)

I finally have a chance to eat this fish soup. It used to be "kuew teow kei". Recently, it change to the fish soup stall. I couldn't remember when it change. The stall bosses are very busy. I have no chance to ask them.
I like the food order system.
1) Park your car
2) Take a number plate like above. Remember to check the number plate with a clip on top
3) Find a place to sit . The number plate must face the stall owner side. (Dad said it is for good "feng shui")
4) When previous orders is done, a boss with white cap will take a clip and ask your order
5) Remember to place your order fast. He will scold if you order too slow.
6) I learn to rap the order to him
7) Clip is taken away. Please don't expect the boss to double confirm the order or have eye contact with you. However, he confirm will hear your order clearly.

That is my order experience.

Fish soup (small)
I find the soup is a bit salty. Previously, the soup base is just nice. The fish ball is very QQ.

Fish dumpling made of Fish paste.
It is recommend to order middle size fish soup. Middle size fish soup have more ingredients. For example, fish slices and fish dumpling. Small size fish soup don't have this 2 ingredients.

Dried Mee Pok (small) RM6.00
