Island Hopping @ Pulau Sapi and Pulau Manukan

Pulau Sapi is also known as Cow Island
Pulau Manukan is know as Chicken Island
Pulau Mamutik is known as Duck Island

Around 11.15am, we finally walk to Jesselton point. There are many tour operators at the ticketing hall. If not mistaken, there are around 11 tour operators.

I like Jesselton point ticketing system. All the tour operators have the same price. It is up to us to choose the one we one. Unlike my previous experience with Bali water Sport Company, I need to keep bargain for the price.

A small advice, please check whether the tour operator placed their staff on the island too. We choose sunny rainbow tour & travel. It is good that there will be a staff from sunny rainbow checks our ticket when we reach the island. The staff will remind us our ship departure time. From my observation, some customers have to keep running around the harbour to check which boat is theirs. Sunny Rainbow staff helps us to solve this problem
·        This is purely my experience sharing.

Around 12.00 noon, we reach our first destination, Pulau Sapi. Pulau Sapi is the smallest island among the 5 islands. I was surprised that there are many tourists from Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan were there. Most of the people came to this island for the barbeque seafood buffet. When they enjoy their lunch, we got the chance for  our “eye” feast.

Since we did not opt for the buffet, KH, Leow and Catherine decided to try out Para Sailing. CS did not found it interesting so he stayed back with me to take photo. As I just recovered from hypothermia, I was quite worried I would vomit in the sky. I just sat in the boat enjoy the scenery

Para sailing
Couple seat = RM180
Single seat = RM90

Tips
-> Talk nicely to the staff, who know they mind give you discount price.
·        -Double check the timing of para sailing with staff. We were told each player have 15 minutes time in the sky. However, KH and Catherine only got to pay around 8 minutes. In another case, Leow only got to play for around 4 minutes. The staff did apologize with us. It meant 15 minutes on the boat and includes playing para sailing.

At 1.15pm, we departed to Pulau Manukan. To me, Pulau Manukan was like Pulau Sibu, Johor. Pulau Manukan have twin beach too. We did absolutely nothing on the island but relax. We enjoy our light aka expensive lunch in Perahu Restaurant. The restaurant was run by Sutera Harbor Company too. Island always gave me a feeling of relax and slow motion style of life. Our food only arrived after 45 minutes of wait.  The Club sandwich was very delicious. Due to my camera no battery, photo was not seen in my food journalpost.

Around 3.30pm, we left the island and go back to Jesselton point. There are some Korean boys just completed their swim in the boat too. Due to their short wet hair, KH experienced wet hair spray during the boat journey. I could not help laughing, as the situation was too funny.

It was sad to see that most of the coral on these islands have passed away. Hopefully, more conservation can be done to keep the island beauty.

Sambal Belacan Fried Kang Kong RM8
Deep Fried Butter Mantis Prawn RM52

 Garlic Fried Paku Pakis RM8

Steam Fish with Soy Source RM72
Clay Pot Fish Head RM72

Name: Seafood Dinner

Place: Welcome Seafood Restaurant ( near to Cititel Express)

Price: RM233.00

Review: The sambal fried kang kong was delicious but just a bit too oily. The garlic fried paku pakis is a must to order. It taste so tender and good. CS complained the mantis prawn has too little meat.  The main dish is grouper fish. There is nothing to discuss on the freshness of the fish. I like the idea recomend by the waitress. A grouper was cook into 2 different dish. It body and tail was steamed with soy souce. We can taste the natural sweetness of the fish by this correct timing of steam. (I am hungry again). The fish head was deep fried and stew in claypot. CS prefer the claypot fish head as the texture of the fish was more rich. I really recommend this restaurant for simple cooking style of seafood.

Name: Kaya toast bread

Place: Fook Yuen ( next to Cititel Express)

Price: RM10.20
Review: Kaya toast bread is good but it is not the best I ever tasted. I understand the number system is good so customer can wait and take themselves. However, it was so confusing on which counter to take our order. In the end, we feel stressful in eating because need to keep looking at the number plate. The service need to be improved.

Name: Bat Kut Teh

Place: Da Ban Bat Kut Teh, 大班(夜市)肉骨茶

Price: RM50.20

Review: The soup is lighter in taste compare to Klang style bat kut teh. The meat is tender soft. The pork meat ball is normal. The dry bat kut teh is a bit too salty for me.We are surprised that drink need to order in another shop. The boiled vegetable was great. No photos was taken because we are too hungry.

Name: Breakfast

Place: A shop in Gaya Street

Price: RM5.50 for danish noodle

Review: The portion of our food is very generous. The cook give lots of ingredient for each bowl of food. I learn up that one bowl of noodle can be share among of 2 persons. The porridge is very delicious. I order danish mee but not really my liking. It is too oily. The yee mee shape look different from peninsular yee mee. Sabah yee mee taste great too. I was surprised to find Yee Mee in Sabah. Yee Mee was not found in Kuching, Sarawak. Some of my Sarawak friend no taste Yee mee before too

Name: Tea Break

Place: Perahu Restaurant, Sutera Harbour, Pulau Manukan

Stories Told by Mountain Guide

All these stories was collected while chatting with different mountain guides and park rangers. Some stories may be listened from my team mate that hike to the peak

1) Helicopter rescue KL girl
A KL girl sprained her leg and can not hike down the mountain. She refused to let the rescuers to carry her down the mountain in sketcher. Rescuers called Sabah Air to send a helicopter. As the situation was not severe, Sabah Air was reluctant to send a helicopter. The girl insist to have helicopter to transport her to the nearest hospital. In the end, Sabah Air agreed to carry her at RM10,000. We were not sure who settled the bill. However, there are certain medical insurance do provide helicopter rescue.

2) Helicopter rescue heavy person
There are 2 tourist from Arab hike the mountain. Unfortunately, one of the tourist hurt his leg. The rescuers abandon the plan to carry him down the mountain. Reason is the tourist weighted 130kg. The sketcher is not able to handle such heavy weight. Thus, rescuers request the help of helicopter. However, helicopter can not reach mount KK helicopter pad due to bad weather. In the end, after 2 days of waiting, the helicopter finally able to bring the tourist to the hospital

3) Traffic jam near the peak.
one of my friend wake up very early just to walk to the peak. She was facing some trouble to climb a cliff. In the end, it cause a huge queue below the cliff.
mountain guide : Ini siapa punya mountain guide?
                            (Who is your mountain guide?)
friend: ..............(not able to answer as she was dangling there
mountain guide: you turun dulu, sudah traffic jam ini
(Please come down first. You cause a traffic jam down here)
my friend with no other choice need to climb down.

mountain guide: kasut beratus -ratus ringgit tak dapat naik. you tengok saya punya 10 ringgit sahaja
                            boleh naik
( hundred ringit shoes not able to climb the cliff. You see mine. My shoes only cost
RM10 and able to reach the top)
In the end, Please just buy kampung adidas to hike mount kk.

4) Avoid using wooden walking stick
wooden walking stick is good as it will support our body weight while hike up or going down the hill. However, it is advise to use proper metal walking stick in Mount KK. As the wood some time can not support our body weight, it will snap into 2. Willy seen one. When the wood stick snap, it have 2 sharp spear and nearly pierce into the man body. Metal walking stick with shock absorption is a good tool. A good walking stick can be found around the range of RM30 to RM50 in Kota Kinabalu. CS bought 2 very good walking stick from ACE hardware, Kuala Lumpur. It cost only RM17.90. We donate them to Willy so he able to help the other in the future.

Mountain guides do like to share stories with us. However, they will not tell any stories related to death or missing cases in the mountain. Even after we reach Kinabalu Park, they refused to tell us those stories. The following story was told by our tourist guide, silver.

5) Don't play in the mountain
2 siblings were very bored at Laban Rata. At night, they decided to take a tour around Laban Rata hostel. They did not inform anyone. After 3 days , their bodies was found. They were only 16 years old and 18 years old. Please respect the mountain.

Mesilau Trail Experience, Mountain Kota Kinabalu

4 April 2013
Our hiking team consists of 14 team members. Due to the different of flight schedule, 9 of the team members travel to Kota Kinabau from  3 April 2013 to 7 April 2013. We called them Group A(GA). The rest of us (5 team members include me) is Group B(GB). Terry is in charge of GA too. Since GA arrive earlier than GB, Terry helps us to register and take name tags from the Kota Kinabalu Park HQ. our tourist guide, silver help us to pack food for GB as supper.

We arrived late around 12 midnight. The night before the hike, we stay at Mesilau Nature Resort, Bishop Head 1. The room was great with all the facilities well equipped.I was very excited to see the sky is full of stars. After supper and bath, CS and me have great star gazing session from the car park.

5 April 2013
I only get a few hours sleep before the hike. Reasons were we arrive late to Kota Kinabalu and not able to sleep well due to coldness. In the morning, I was so excited that we are going to hike the mountain soon. After a great breakfast, we took our own lunch package from the hotel too. The cook prepared 2 bananas and 3 triangle shape sandwich for us.

8.30am, we were introduced to our mountain guides. They are Ah Tong, Willy and Adin. Ah Tong briefed us on the safety guideline of hiking the mountain. He advice us not to wait for any slow team members. It will jeopardize the whole team speed from reaching the Laban Rata Hostel. Normal people will hike 1 km per hour. He encouraged us to go faster. Since Mount KK is high in altitude, no mosquitoes can be found here. Mesilau trail starting point to Laban Rata Rest House is around 8km. He assumed us travel at normal speed, should be able to reach by 5pm.

Porter fee
Timpohon trail 1 kg = RM8
Mesilau trail 1kg = RM9

Mountain Taxi
This mean a hiker is injured or out of energy but still have high determination to reach the peak. Porter can carry the hiker up by charging RM350 per km. There are different rate too. If uphill journey, porter may charge more which is RM400 per km.

Porter fee was paid before the journey start.  We paid RM450 for a total of 50kg (if not mistaken).

At 9.00am we start to hike the summit trail from Mesilau Gate. The first 1km, I do not feel any difficult in climbing. I was quite happy as i only used 30 minutes to complete the first 1 km.

As I proceed the second km and third km, I started to feel tired but still high in spirit. At each rest house, I dare not rest too long. The longer you rest, the harder you get up and walk again.

Then I start to forget to record the timing of my speed and distance. Between the 3km and 4km , most of the road is downhill. I have bad experiences with walking down staircase before. The shadow of the bad memory kept playing in my mind. Each steps I took, I prayed  very hard. CS was beside me all time helping me to walk each steps. His warm hand lighten my stress a bit

As I experienced coldness, I wore up my windbreaker and rest at one of the rest point. Willy began to notice my weird behavior when travel down hill.  He started to trail behind us to ensure our safeness.

Around 1pm, we met up Ah Tong at one of the rest point. While having lunch, Ah Tong shared with us  some stories happened in Mount KK (Please refer to "Stories told by Mountain Guides"). We met a guy from Air Asia Flight Operation department. During lunch time, I was having great time chatting with others and enjoy my meal. After lunch, my worst nightmare occurred.

It was raining. I exchanged my rain coat with CS as my rain coat was smaller in size. I wore Ah Tong spare rain coat as it was big enough to cover my whole body include my small back pack.  The rain began to fall more heavy as we hike higher and higher. I started to feel shortage of breath. I kept have buzzing sound in my eara due to the higher altitude.  Dizziness began to take over me. My eye sight turned blurry. I was very scard. Willy kept asking me to rest longer. I lied to them by saying I am just fine. My speed was dragging everyone behind. I forced myself to keep moving forward.

At 4.5km, I feel nausea. I tried to vomit but only air and saliva was out.  Willy kept asking me on my health history. This time, CS and Willy forced me to rest longer as I was very pale and my body kept shivering. I took a really long rest then start to walk again. CS requested me at least make it to Laban Rata Rest House.I wanted to meet my friends in Laban Rata too.

When we start walking again, it was raining heavily. My shoes, socks and pants were very wet. I felt terrible cold. I began to trembling. Each step i take, my body felt more heavy. I faced difficulty in lifting my legs. My eye sight was very poor. I can't see the staircases properly. Willy forced me to sit down on the staircase under the big rain. I was shivering terribly. I was very scard and worry. I didn't meet CS's expectation.  Willy and CS tried to warm my hand and head by rubbing them. After some time, I felt better and start walking again.

At the last 600m to the Laban Rata cross road, I not very sure how I walk. CS and Willy had been dragging me toward the cross road. The rain never seem to stop. All I knew was cold. Very cold. Very dizzy. Very heavy.Once I see the signboard, Right to Laban Rata and Left to Timpohon Gate. I flopped down on the floor. I was breathing so hard. My body was trembling and shivering uncontrollably and vigorously. Willy was rubbing my head hard. I felt numb. My head was spinning.

I not very sure how the shivering stop and how I gain back my conscious.I felt clear again because I felt wind gushing around me. I was awake then when I realised Willy was carrying me downhill at incredible speed. I was requested to spend my night with the park rangers at Layang-Layang park ranger hostel. Thankful to CS, he abandon his goal and accompany me there for a night.

While resting in Layang-Layang hut, Willy explained to me that those symptom were hypothermia. Everyone have a limit to altitude. As the higher I go, my body can not adapt to the environment change. Oxygen not able to reach my brain on time. Therefore, I kept feeling dizzy. Willy and Adin left us when they see my condition more stable. I slept early that night. I was very grateful that park rangers shared their heater for our room.

6 April 2013

I felt so good like nothing ever happened before. 8.30am, we bid goodbye with park rangers and start to hike down Timpohon trail. This time, It was only me and CS. CS kept motivated me walk toward the end point. It took us 6 hours to hike down as I walked very slow. We were very happy when we saw "welcome back to Timpohon Gate" We were so happy that we forget to write our names on the log book. We proceed to take shuttle van to Kinabalu Park HQ.

Around 5pm, our teammates began to reach Kinabalu Park HQ. Our last team member reach around 7pm. Due to CS and my carelessness on forget to write name on log book, Ah Tong and Adin need to spend some time drink coffee(explain situation) with park rangers.  Park rangers really worry that someone went missing in the mountain.

Once I back in town, I checked online. My symptoms meet the hypothermia description perfectly. I was having moderate hypothermia. If my symptoms turn worse, It will became severe hypothermia. CS warned me not to hike Mount KK again. He thought I was going to die when reaching the crossroad. Mountain guide was quite optimist in this case. He want me to have full body check up and training. Willy mentioned that I only can hike mount kk again if I have doctor approval letter.

Lessons  I learn
  • have body check up before extreme outdoor activity
  • do not over push physical limit
  • donate your raincoat and walking stick to mountain guide if you did not wish to bring home
  • respect the nature
  • I read wikipedia on hypothermia. Rescuers only want to save so some time we misunderstand their action. One of the rescue technique is keep rubbing chest using plastic bag. At one point, they keep looking for plastic bags but fail. As plastic bag is a good heat conductor when rubbing chest part. In the end, they only rub my head, hands and legs in order for the patient keep warm.

I love the beautiful scenery of mount KK. However, due to this experience, I need to be more prepared when travel to high altitude place.

Ler Review on Kota Kinabalu Trip

Sabah, The Land Below The Wind is truly beautiful place to visit. Its nature beauty and culture attract me the most. It seem to put a charm on me. I felt like buying a flight ticket and have fun in Sabah again. With this journey, I am proud to say I am MALAYSIAN. I visited all the states in Malaysia. Yeah Hoo. (^^)

This trip is quite a special one. First 2 days of the trip, I was hiking in Mount KK. Last 2 days of the trip I was island hopping. This is called all rounded travel, 上山下海。

Mountain Hiking Review
I need to admit that I do not have a good training plan for Mount KK. CS been consistently trained up his stamina by jogging and go hiking in Gunung Nuang. It was very enjoyable at the first 3km of Mesilau Trail. From 4km onward, my speed began to slow down. I became more tired and lost focus. Mountain guide, Willy told me that I fainted 4 times. I was surprised. I did not calculate how many i faint. I only knew I was dizzy and difficulty in walking. This symptom is called hypothermia. (More detail. please refer to my Mesilau Trail Experience)

Island Hopping Review
This is the first time I see Islands so near to a city. I truly enjoy the boat ride, crystal clear sea water and greenery. It is sad to hear that most of the coral around Sapi Island, Manukan island and Mamutik Island died off. Hopefully more conservative activities can be conducted to save the nature gift.

Million Thanks to
1) Ah Tong, leader of our 3 mountain guides.
He was the eldest among the mountain guide. He is like a father where he will keep telling "are you OK?" , "keep Going", "Willy and Adin is behind you". Those encourage word  truly warm our heart  when hiking mount kk. Ah Tong is like a wizard too. As we chat, we found out that Ah Tong like to "appear" suddenly next to us. At one moment, he walk pass us then after some time, you rest for a moment, Ah Tong is right behind you. You continue walking.. Suddenly out of no where, Ah Tong will appear beside you telling us how to step on the rock. I was very amazed with Ah Tong's ability.

2)Willy, mountain guide
He is like a brother. He kept follow me to ensure I have ample rest. Around 5km of Mesilau trail, with those heavy bags on his back, he still can hold my hand and pull me up the staircase. He is a joyous person and keep joking with us. He is very serious when seeing our team members have injury or any sign of sickness.

3) Adin, montain guide
Adin is a bit quiet. He prefer to listen to his mp3 along the way. When any of the team members is slow, he can trail back so fast to find the member back.

4) CS, my beloved boyfriend
I truly appreciate he organised this trip for us.  I learn to trust him through this experience. He never left me when I in sickness. Although his motivation techniques need some brush up, he did not let go in helping me. I may not able to walk to the peak. I am grateful to have him help me all the way to Timpohon Gate. He sacrificed a lot for me just to take care of me. In the end, he have to plan another trip to mount kk.

5) Grace, Silver, Drivers from TrekFinder
Thank you Grace for arranging good transportation due to our different flight scedule. Thank you Silver for telling us story on KK. Thank you drivers for fetching us even though it is midnight.

6) Sabah friends
for introducing good food for us. However, I still not yet tasted tarap fruit, Sheng yok Mee and Tuaran Mee.

7) TCH, CKY, WWH, GGP, TTS, HTL, CHC, CWC, KWM, TSL, LKH, LKH
Thank you for helping each other during this hiking.
